The recently held U.S. midterm elections turned into a heavy defeat for the Republican Party. In this event, Democratic candidates achieved a significant victory, regaining control of Congress, and this result literally indicates a shift in the balance of power in America.

The Role of Economy and Iran War in Voters' Decisions

The results of this election show that the Republican majority in both the Senate and House of Representatives has been lost, and this defeat is particularly serious for Donald Trump, the former president. Economic concerns, rising living costs, immigration issues, and the Iran war were among the prominent topics that played a significant role in voters' decisions.

Exit polls indicated that a significant portion of voters wanted more serious oversight from Congress over the President's actions. This shift in the balance of power allows the Democrats to hold the chairmanship of important congressional committees starting January 2027 and to use their oversight and legislative powers to limit Trump's administration's agenda.

Analysis of the Consequences of Democrats' Victory

Thomas J. Walden, an assistant professor at Boston University in social studies, in an analysis of the consequences of this election, states that Trump's approach of asking citizens to see his name on the ballot, given his low popularity, was a risky decision. Moreover, this approach led to deeper divides in society and is a sign of severe voter dissatisfaction with Trump's administration.

At the center of this dissatisfaction is the financial and economic capability of citizens, which has been severely affected by rising inflation. Economic pressures stemming from two key decisions, namely ill-conceived tariff policies and the government's confrontational approach towards Iran, have spilled over into the energy market, putting significant pressure on ordinary American consumers with rising gasoline prices.

While this victory for the Democrats changes the balance of power, it still faces serious structural obstacles in challenging the government. Parliamentary oversight of executive agencies under Trump's control will have limited dimensions, despite the president employing the "veto power" tool.

In the long-term horizon and looking towards the 2028 presidential election, the Democrats' victory could mark a turning point in the decline of the "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) discourse. This trend will make it extremely difficult for figures like J.D. Vance and other leadership contenders of the MAGA movement to revive and reconstruct the political current.
