The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the delay of the 2027 Asian Cup competitions. These competitions, which were scheduled to take place from January 7 to February 5, 2027, hosted by Saudi Arabia, will now be held from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028, according to the new schedule. This decision has created a significant change in the Iranian football calendar and has paved the way for the holding of the Cup competitions in the current season.
Impact of the Delay of the Asian Cup on Iranian Football
The League Organization and the Football Federation of Iran, considering the one-year delay of the Asian Cup and the reduction of the competition schedule's congestion, have decided to hold the Iran Football Cup competitions in the 2026–2027 season. This decision was made due to the problems that had previously arisen because of the increase in the number of Premier League teams to 18 and the overlap of club competitions with the national team's schedule for participation in the Asian Cup. These factors had created limitations in organizing the Iranian football calendar.

Cancellation of the Cup is Off the Table
In such circumstances, the possibility of canceling the Cup from the current season's competition schedule had been raised, but with the change in the timing of the Asian Cup, this issue has been ruled out based on the new decision of the country's football officials. The delay of these competitions will also cause the anticipated timeframe for the Iranian national team's participation in the Asian Cup to be removed from the current season's calendar, giving the League Organization more time to plan domestic competitions.
Accordingly, the League Organization is set to finalize and announce the schedule for the Cup competitions after reviewing the postponed matches and determining the program for the upcoming weeks of the Premier League. Thus, the Iran Football Cup competitions will be held in the current season, and the clubs in the country will have the opportunity to participate in these competitions in addition to the Premier League.
