David Goff, head of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), announces a new achievement in predicting heart health. Researchers in this study have concluded that they can identify the risk of cardiovascular diseases using ECG data collected during sleep stages.

Research at Massachusetts General Hospital

These patients participated in a sleep study at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In part of this research, their heart activity during sleep was measured using ECG. Researchers demonstrated using deep learning algorithms that the data obtained from ECG in combination with sleep stages can effectively predict cardiovascular health outcomes.

More Accurate Predictions with Deep Learning Algorithms

The findings of this research indicate that even considering other risk factors such as age, gender, diabetes, high blood pressure, and smoking, these algorithms are capable of making more accurate health predictions. For example, in the lightest stage of sleep, fluctuations in heart rate patterns and electrical conduction can specifically indicate future health risks.

The authors of this research note that these fluctuations can enhance subtle abnormalities in heart rate dynamics. The combination of data obtained from ECG during sleep has improved current cardiovascular risk models by 6% for atrial fibrillation, 9% for heart failure, and 7% for predicting mortality.

Goff emphasizes that these increases may seem negligible at first glance, but they significantly enhance our ability to distinguish between individuals who will and will not develop heart failure. In the future, AI systems could assist doctors in identifying patients with sleep disorders who are at greater risk for heart failure.

Goff concludes by stating that proven analytical approaches like this can be integrated as a tool for screening adverse cardiovascular outcomes in diagnostic tests for patients undergoing sleep studies.
