Brigadier Seyyed Abolfazl Mousavi-Pour, head of Tehran's traffic police, announced the registration of over 73,000 license plate violations in October 2026. These violations include the installation of unauthorized plates, changing the standard of plates, lack of front or rear plates, unreadable plates, changing the location of vehicle license plates, and also covering, tampering with, or defacing vehicle plates.

Motorcyclist Violations and the Importance of License Plates

Brigadier Mousavi-Pour also referred to violations related to motorcyclists, stating that over 24,000 license plate violations have been recorded for this category of drivers. Major violations pertain to the lack of front and rear plates or unreadable plates, as well as covering, tampering with, or defacing them. He emphasized that any tampering or alteration of the numbers and letters on a plate is not only considered a simple violation but is recognized as a crime. These violations can have serious consequences, including a fine of 700,000 tomans and the possibility of imprisonment from six months to one year based on Article 720 of the Islamic Penal Code.

The Role of License Plates in Traffic Order and Urban Security

Brigadier Mousavi-Pour, emphasizing the importance of license plates in traffic order and urban security, stated that a vehicle's license plate acts as its identity, and any alteration, covering, or defacement of it is considered not only a violation but, in some cases, a crime. License plate-related violations are recognized as one of the effective factors in the occurrence of accidents and fleeing the scene of an accident. For this reason, addressing these violations is considered a serious preventive measure to reduce incidents and enhance urban security.

The head of Tehran's traffic police concluded by emphasizing the necessity of adhering to license plate regulations and urged citizens to pay special attention to observing traffic laws and regulations, given the importance of this issue. Actions that can lead to a reduction in violations and an increase in road safety will ultimately benefit all citizens.
