Basant, the economic representative of the United States, agreed early this morning in a meeting with He Lifeng, the Vice Premier of China, in Washington to extend the economic ceasefire between the two countries for another two months. This agreement, known as the "Busan Agreement," aims to manage disputes and work towards improving the economic relations of the two major powers in the world.

Details of the Busan Agreement

The Busan Agreement was signed on October 30, 2025, during a meeting between Donald Trump, the President of the United States, and Xi Jinping, the President of China, in Busan, South Korea, and is now set to be extended until January 10, 2024. This agreement was particularly signed at a time when the relations between the two countries are in a sensitive state due to trade tensions and global competition.

Basant stated in this meeting: "We came together today to explore whether we can reach a larger agreement, rather than undertaking a series of smaller actions." She referred to the main goal of this agreement, which is to reduce tensions and create a foundation for future cooperation.

Economic and Security Talks

During this meeting, Basant added: "The focus of our discussions was on achieving effective commitments that would safeguard the economic interests and national security of the United States and protect American workers, farmers, and businesses." She also referred to her previous discussions with He Lifeng in New York and emphasized that both sides had discussed trade issues and challenges arising from artificial intelligence.

The extension of the economic ceasefire agreement was announced alongside Xi Jinping's three-day visit to the United States. The warm welcome from Donald Trump and his wife Melania for the President of China and his wife at the "Andrews Air Force Base" reflects the importance of this visit and the efforts to improve relations.

This agreement was signed at a time when both countries are facing multiple challenges. On one hand, the trade war and high tariffs on each other's goods, and on the other hand, concerns about economic and technological security have become key issues in the negotiations. Basant and He were looking for ways to collaborate to contribute to global economic stability.

However, given the existing tensions, many analysts believe that this agreement is just a small step towards improving relations and that more serious actions are needed to address real issues. In this context, the extension of the economic ceasefire could be a sign of both countries' willingness to maintain calm in bilateral relations and prevent escalation of tensions.
