Azita Nabizadeh, head of the Health Technology Assessment and Economic Studies Group at the Food and Drug Administration, discussed poisonings and complications resulting from improper medication use in an important interview. She emphasized the importance of awareness of surrounding dangers and adhering to safety principles in living environments.

Dangers of Improper Medication Use

Nabizadeh pointed out that poisonings can occur due to improper medication use, improper storage of chemicals, exposure to toxic gases, and even consuming unhealthy foods, stating: "Adhering to safety principles in the home and workplace is one of the most important solutions to prevent serious complications from these incidents."

She also mentioned the dangers of overdosing on medications and added: "Self-medication and ignoring drug interactions can lead to serious complications. Increasing the amount of medication not only does not speed up the treatment process but also increases the likelihood of complications and poisoning."

Protecting Children and Preventing Poisoning

This health expert highlighted the necessity of protecting children from accidental poisonings and recommended that medications should be stored in their original packaging, with clear labels, and out of reach of children. She added: "When giving medication to a child, one should avoid referring to it with names like candy or chocolate to prevent the child from confusing the medication with food items."

Nabizadeh emphasized the services of drug and poison information centers, stating: "People can call 190, extension 3, code 2 for advice on medication use and side effects, dosage, and drug and food interactions. Experts at these centers provide specialized and practical guidance."

She also added: "In case of suspected poisoning, one should not wait for symptoms to appear or resort to home remedies without receiving specialized guidance. Inducing vomiting in a poisoned person should be avoided, and in case of an emergency, one should immediately contact emergency services at 115 and follow specialized recommendations."

Nabizadeh concluded by calling for increased public awareness regarding the prevention of poisonings, stating: "Adhering to safety principles in the storage and use of medications and chemicals can help reduce the risk of poisonings and protect public health."
