Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, in his speech at the eighty-first United Nations General Assembly, reiterated the importance of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) as institutions supporting international law. He emphasized the need to maintain their independence and integrity in light of the challenges facing these institutions.
Emphasis on the Absence of Double Standards
Costa stated in his remarks that there is no place for double standards in international law and that these institutions must be firmly supported. He referred to deliberate violations of international law and declared that we must act as guardians of human rights and justice on a global scale.

Condemnation of Trump's Threats
Costa referred to the threats made by Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, against international institutions and his request for European countries to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, deeming these behaviors unacceptable. He stated: "Threatening or attacking the International Criminal Court and its staff will have serious consequences for human rights and justice globally."
In recent years, the United States has sanctioned over 12 current and former officials of the International Criminal Court, including half of its current judges. These actions relate to the U.S. response to the Court's investigations into American and Israeli officials and the issuance of an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of the Israeli regime. In fact, the United States and the Israeli regime, as countries that are not members of the International Criminal Court, are trying to prevent legal prosecution.
Global Consequences
Costa further emphasized that "accountability cannot be subject to political considerations and expediency." He believes that supporting international institutions and strengthening human rights globally should be prioritized, and countries around the world must work together to prevent human rights violations.
These statements by Antonio Costa come at a time when there are serious challenges in the field of human rights and international justice, and various countries must align and cooperate to strengthen international institutions. He also highlighted the importance of supporting the International Court of Justice as the main body overseeing the adherence to human rights and justice.
