Abbas Ashouri, Deputy of Natural Environment and Biodiversity of the Gilan Department of Environment Protection, explained the importance of public participation in monitoring and protecting migratory birds in conjunction with World Migratory Bird Day. He pointed to the slogan of World Migratory Bird Day, "Every Bird Matters; Your Observation Counts," emphasizing that data collection and field observations by citizens and local communities can have positive impacts on identifying flight paths, monitoring populations, and protecting the wetland habitats of the province.

Wetlands and Environment of Gilan

Ashouri stated that wetlands, coastal strips, rivers, and forest lands in Gilan are considered key areas for wintering and landing of birds during migration, warning that any changes in land use and reduction of water resources could pose a serious threat to the survival of these species. He added that currently, attention to these habitats and their protection is one of the fundamental priorities of the Gilan Department of Environment Protection.

Participatory Opportunities for the Public

The Deputy of Natural Environment in Gilan highlighted the importance of recording bird characteristics by enthusiasts, farmers, and environmental guards, stating: "Recording information such as species type, time, geographical location, and bird populations in reputable systems allows researchers to examine the effects of climate change and shifts in flight corridors." This action not only aids in identifying rare species but also creates a suitable platform for scientific and cultural research in the field of the environment.

Ashouri considered organizing birdwatching tours and educational workshops as other effective approaches to enhance environmental literacy in the community and called for greater public cooperation in continuously reporting field observations to the environment. He emphasized that this type of participation can help synergize the community with conservation goals and raise public awareness regarding environmental issues.

Environmental Challenges

Despite the efforts made, there are numerous challenges in the field of environment in Gilan. Habitat destruction, illegal hunting, and climate change are among the issues that pose a serious threat to migratory birds. Ashouri expressed concern over the decline in migratory bird numbers in the wetlands of this province, stressing the need for attention and immediate action towards the protection of these species. He believes that with effective cooperation and participation from the public and responsible organizations, the situation of birds and their habitats can be improved.
