The FaceSurvival AI tool, developed by American researchers, has the capability to assist doctors in diagnosing the severity of diseases and selecting appropriate treatment methods by analyzing a simple photo of patients' faces. This system has been trained using millions of images of healthy individuals and 35,000 photos of cancer patients, focusing particularly on facial features, especially around the eyes.
Advancements in Patient Diagnosis and Treatment
This tool can provide an estimate of patients' health status and help doctors make better choices for intensive treatments such as radiation therapy and surgery. However, researchers emphasize that this technology is not yet ready for use in hospitals and requires more time for development and testing.

Raymond Mack, the senior researcher of this study from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, states: "As the population ages, doctors need better methods to assess patients' physical capabilities and vulnerability levels." He has described the ultimate goal of this research as helping doctors make personalized treatment decisions.
Development of New Technologies for Assessing Biological Age
In addition to FaceSurvival, Mack and his colleagues are evaluating another tool called FaceAge, which estimates individuals' biological age. This tool examines facial features and shows how different areas of the face affect individuals' apparent age. According to Mack, despite common differences in photos, this tool has shown stable and consistent performance and can be used as an indicator for measuring aging trends.
Researchers have also invited the general public to participate in this study by submitting their facial photos to receive a personal estimate of their biological age. Professor Miroslav Bober, a video processing and machine learning expert at the University of Surrey in the UK, emphasizes that any claims regarding this tool's ability to track aging trends are still premature and require further testing.
Ultimately, this research represents innovative advancements in the field of artificial intelligence and medicine, which can help transform the methods of diagnosing and treating patients. Despite challenges and the need for more data, there is hope for a brighter future for cancer patients and others.
