A U.S. federal judge has temporarily overturned Donald Trump's action to ban three news media outlets from the White House and has ordered his administration to restore access to these outlets. This decision comes after a lawsuit by CNN, MSNBC, and Politico, which deemed the ban a "clear violation" of the legal right to freedom of the press and a form of discrimination.
Reason for the Ban and Media Protests
The Trump administration initially stated that it had cut off these media outlets' access to the White House due to the publication of "fake news." Following this action, the White House accused these outlets of threatening "national security" without providing specific evidence. Meanwhile, Judge Timothy Kelly, appointed by Trump, has stated that the legal process regarding the withdrawal of these outlets' access was not properly followed.

This temporary order, which will last for 14 days, gives the court an opportunity to review the case more thoroughly. Judge Kelly stated in his ruling that these media outlets likely can demonstrate that the White House did not adhere to "due legal process" when implementing this ban.
Legal Challenges and Media Support
After the press credentials of journalists were revoked and their access cut off, these media outlets sued the government. In defense of this action, the Trump administration cited the dissemination of misinformation and national security threats posed by these media outlets, but the court did not accept this argument. The judge specified in his ruling that the government provided no sufficient evidence to show that revoking journalists' credentials to the White House contributes to national security.
Ted Boutrous, the attorney representing these media outlets, told CNN: "This ruling is a strong defense of press freedom, due process, and the rule of law." Meanwhile, major U.S. television networks also withdrew from jointly covering White House events in protest of this ban.
Additionally, 49 media organizations, including CBC News, The New York Times, and Fox News, supported the lawsuit by CNN, MSNBC, and Politico by submitting a legal brief. Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized news organizations and his administration has taken legal action against several media outlets, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and BBC.
In light of these legal challenges and the sensitivity of the issue, Judge Kelly expressed his doubts about the Trump administration's national security motives, noting that the President did not mention national security in his initial announcement of the ban. This ruling not only affects the status of these three media outlets but could also have widespread implications for press freedom and journalists' right to access information.
