The government of Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has approved the sale of nearly 50 F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia. This decision, which indicates a shift in U.S. arms policy, has raised concerns among several members of Congress.
Saudi Arabia's Efforts to Purchase Advanced Fighter Jets
Saudi Arabia has been seeking to buy advanced combat aircraft for years. The F-35 fighter jet, with its stealth radar technology, allows it to evade detection by enemies. Until now, the United States had refrained from selling these jets to Saudi Arabia, especially due to its commitments to Israel, which must benefit from more advanced weapons as an ally in the region.

The U.S. Congress has 30 days to review this $24 billion deal and can block it if necessary. Raja Krishnamoorthi, a Democratic representative from Illinois, has strongly opposed this sale, warning that it could transfer U.S. military technologies to the Communist Party of China.
Concerns About Technology Transfer
Other Democratic lawmakers and U.S. defense officials are also worried that Saudi Arabia may share this sensitive technology with China. The U.S. State Department has stated that this action will help achieve the goals of its foreign policy and national security, emphasizing that the sale of these weapons will not alter the military balance in the region.
The Trump administration has a close relationship with Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, and the two have met several times in recent years. The latest proposal for arms sales to Saudi Arabia includes 48 F-35 fighter jets to be manufactured by Lockheed Martin. This deal positions Saudi Arabia on par with Israel, which currently has 50 F-35 jets.
However, the Israeli Foreign Ministry has announced that it has recently decided to purchase another squadron of F-35s, which could bring the number of these jets in the country to 100. While these deals are presented as a progress in U.S.-Saudi military relations, there are serious concerns about the implications for regional security and sensitive military technologies.
