The United States has agreed to sell 500 Patriot missiles to Ukraine. These missiles, known as air defense systems, are critically needed by Ukraine to counter Russian air attacks.

Reasons for Ukraine's Need for Patriot Missiles

The decision to sell these missiles was made after Ukraine announced that the delivery of these shipments had been delayed in recent months. The U.S. Department of State has stated that the cost of these advanced "PAC-3" interceptor missiles will be approximately $2.1 billion, and the funding will be provided by Ukraine's allies in Europe and Canada.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, has repeatedly urged the United States to expedite the delivery of Patriot systems. He has emphasized that these missiles are the only effective weapon for intercepting Russian ballistic missiles. Zelensky previously mentioned the delays in receiving these shipments and stated that Ukraine is in dire need of these missiles as Russia has intensified its attacks.

Challenges and Delivery Timeline

The U.S. Department of State stated in a press release: "The decision to sell these missiles aligns with the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States and aims to strengthen the security of one of America's allied countries, which is a factor for political and economic stability in Europe." Additionally, the statement specifies that the American company Lockheed Martin will be the primary contractor for this deal, and no U.S. budget will be involved in this sale.

However, Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned earlier this week that his country has been waiting for nearly a month for permission to send this vital missile shipment. He also referred in a Telegram post to the occurrence of Russian missile attacks in two regions of Ukraine and expressed concerns about the depletion of Patriot missile stocks.

Given the current challenges, it is still unclear how the production schedule for the Patriot systems will proceed. According to available information, this order pertains to the manufacture of new equipment, and its production will be time-consuming. Therefore, the delivery of these systems to Ukraine will not happen quickly.
