The Shumar border, which had been unilaterally closed due to decisions made by the Iraqi side, reopened for commercial and economic activities this morning, Tuesday, September 12. Hashmat Rezaei, the governor of Gilan-e Gharb, announced this good news and said that with the reopening of this border, the process of exporting goods to Iraq has resumed and truck traffic is ongoing.
Truck Traffic and Goods Export Status
The governor of Gilan-e Gharb explained that currently about 300 trucks carrying export goods pass through the Shumar border daily. The main commercial shipments include dried fruits, construction materials, tiles, and perishable goods. This indicates the importance and prosperity of this border in trade exchanges with Iraq.

The Role of the Shumar Border in Iran-Iraq Trade
Kermanshah province, with a 371-kilometer shared border with Iraq, is recognized as one of the important commercial hubs. Nearly three billion dollars worth of goods are exported from these borders annually. The Shumar border is located five kilometers from the city of Naft Shahr and is only 15 kilometers away from the city of Mandali in Iraq.
This border is recognized as an important route for exporting goods to the eastern provinces of Iraq due to its proximity to major Iraqi cities, especially Baghdad. However, due to the damages caused by the eight-year war, its infrastructure has not yet been fully restored.
Now, with the reopening of the Shumar border, traders can visit this border for commercial activities as they did in the past, and they hope that with the improvement of infrastructure, this route will further contribute to the growth of trade exchanges.
