Nikol Pashinyan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, referred today, Thursday, to the ongoing negotiations with the Republic of Azerbaijan and announced that a peace treaty between the two countries may be signed in 2027 to 2028. This news comes at a time when tensions and conflicts between Armenia and Azerbaijan have significantly increased in recent years.
Background of the conflicts
The history of tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan dates back to long-standing conflicts over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. This region, which has a majority Armenian population, declared itself as a self-proclaimed republic in 1991, and since then, the two countries have been involved in several wars and military conflicts. The last war lasted for 44 days in 2020 and resulted in a ceasefire agreement that was signed with the intervention of Russia.

The role of the international community in the negotiations
Pashinyan also referred to the role of the international community in facilitating peace negotiations and emphasized that international support could help reduce tensions and create a basis for long-term agreements. He stated: "We are seeking a comprehensive agreement that not only addresses current issues but also contributes to the security and stability of the region." In this regard, representatives of various countries and international organizations are working to guide both sides towards a peaceful resolution of their problems.
The Prime Minister of Armenia also highlighted the importance of direct dialogues between the two countries and added: "We must move towards a bright and sustainable future, and this is only possible through diplomacy and dialogue." He expressed hope that with the continuation of negotiations, the two countries could reach an agreement that benefits both sides.
Future outlook
Given the tense history of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, signing a peace treaty in 2027-2028 could be a turning point in the history of both countries. This treaty could not only help reduce tensions but also pave the way for economic and social cooperation. If successful in these negotiations, it is expected that both countries will move towards sustainable and peaceful development.
Pashinyan concluded by noting that Armenia seeks to create a safe and stable environment for all its citizens and hopes to achieve this goal through international cooperation and diplomatic efforts.
