Massoud Pezeshkian, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, has recently traveled to Turkmenistan to participate in two important summits, one for the leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States and the other for the Caspian Sea environment summit. During this trip, Pezeshkian had the opportunity to meet with Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia. This meeting, which was supposed to take place on Friday, was held a day earlier due to time constraints.

Reasons for the Early Meeting

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, responded to the question of why this meeting was suddenly held earlier than scheduled by stating that the Presidents of Iran and Russia decided to hold this meeting earlier due to time constraints and the need for dialogue. Peskov emphasized that despite the late hour, the Presidents felt there was enough time for discussion.

This meeting took place at a time when speculation was increasing about a possible phone call between the President of the United States and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. It seems that the consequences of U.S. actions against Iran and the existing challenges in the Middle East have become a significant issue for the U.S. government.

The Importance of This Meeting for Iran-Russia Relations

In his meeting with Vladimir Putin, Massoud Pezeshkian emphasized the continuation of expanding relations between Tehran and Moscow and stated that Iran will never walk away from the negotiating table. He also mentioned that the proposals exchanged through intermediaries with the American side will be summarized after finalization. Putin also referred to Iran's efforts to resolve conflicts in the region and stressed the importance of the two countries' relations.

This meeting occurs at a time when the Commonwealth of Independent States, as a regional intergovernmental organization, is seeking to strengthen economic, political, and military cooperation among its members. This union was established after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, with the aim of cooperation and solidarity among member countries.

Previously, Yuri Ushakov, the assistant to the President of Russia, had announced that Pezeshkian was invited to the summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States for the first time. Thus, his presence at this summit and meeting with Putin can be seen as a positive step towards strengthening Iran-Russia relations.
