Tether, as one of the largest issuers of digital currencies, has recently announced that in 2026, in collaboration with U.S. government agencies, it blocked $550 million of Tether cryptocurrency linked to the Central Bank of Iran and the sanctioned networks of this country. This action demonstrates Tether's serious commitment to combating sanctions evasion and supporting international financial regulations.
Collaboration with U.S. Authorities
Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, stated that the company regularly communicates with U.S. officials, aiming to identify and block illegal funds. Ardoino further explained that with increasing pressure from governments to combat sanctions evasion, Tether will continue to work closely with various U.S. agencies.

This is not the first time Tether has taken such action. In April of this year, the company, in collaboration with U.S. authorities, had blocked over $344 million across two different addresses. Tether has also announced that it has cooperated in over 2,900 investigative cases worldwide, with more than half of these cases, or 1,500, related to U.S. agencies.
Consequences of Asset Blocking
The blocking of Iranian assets by Tether and other U.S. entities could have serious consequences for Iran's economy. Given that cryptocurrencies are used as a tool to evade sanctions, this action could weaken Iran's efforts to utilize such currencies. Furthermore, this trend indicates that financial and governmental entities globally are increasingly focused on identifying and blocking assets related to international sanctions.
Tether collaborates directly with various U.S. entities, including the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Secret Service, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control. These collaborations help Tether effectively identify and block illegal funds on a global scale.
It seems that Tether's actions and its extensive collaborations with U.S. entities are part of global efforts to combat financial corruption and sanctions evasion. The company aims to be recognized as a responsible entity in the world of digital currencies and to contribute to global financial security.
