Thousands of students in Tirana, the capital of Albania, expressed their dissatisfaction with the poor state of universities and government corruption through large gatherings. The protesters, who are calling for the resignation of Edi Rama, the Prime Minister of Albania, set fire to a government building and two banks during their protests.
Anger Over Corruption and Environmental Destruction
These protests, known as the "Flamingo Revolution," have particularly arisen over the construction project of a luxury hotel on a protected island by Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of the former U.S. President. The protesters are opposing environmental destruction and harm to migratory bird habitats, viewing this project as a symbol of government corruption and mismanagement.

The police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protesting crowd, and in response, the protesters threw Molotov cocktails at them and set trash bins on fire. This marks the second day of violence in Tirana, clearly demonstrating the intensity of public anger towards the current state of the country.
Environmental Destruction and Social Crises
The protests have intensified particularly due to environmental destruction and the dire employment situation in Albania. Alongside their opposition to government corruption, students have expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of university facilities and concerning job prospects. These protests have joined a broader anti-government movement seeking fundamental changes in government policies.
Reports indicate that around 20 people, including police officers, have been injured in the unrest, and 16 individuals have been arrested. The European Union is also deeply concerned about the "violent escalation" of these protests and has stated that it will pay attention to reports of excessive police violence against protesters and journalists.
The student protests in Albania reflect a deeper crisis within society. Discontent with corruption and mismanagement has now become a unified voice, bringing the youth of this country to the streets. They are seeking more transparency and truth in the governance of the country and are demanding fundamental changes in economic and social policies through their slogans.
