The shooting by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers at a man from the Dominican Republic who was driving with his five-year-old child in the Bronx neighborhood of New York has sparked outrage among local officials and citizens. This incident, which occurred on Thursday, quickly became a hot topic in the media and social circles.

Reactions from New York Officials

Eric Adams, the Mayor of New York, described the shooting as "unconscionable" and "very serious," and requested that Donald Trump, the President of the United States, "stop" the activities of immigration officers in New York City. He stated that initial reports indicate that the officers had surrounded the vehicle carrying the man and child before firing several shots, but fortunately, the child was not physically harmed.

Pressure on the Government and Calls for Transparency

Additionally, Kathy Hochul, the Governor of New York, expressed her "anger" regarding the shooting in a statement and announced that she had spoken with Donald Trump about the issue. She called for the release of any footage recorded by the officers' body cameras during the shooting to clarify the facts. Hochul also emphasized that the people of New York are tired of the "rogue" actions and "untrained" behavior of these officers.

The US Department of Homeland Security also responded to the incident, stating that its officers had conducted a "targeted operation" to arrest a "known criminal." In the department's statement, it was mentioned that the individual who was shot is "alive" and receiving treatment in the hospital. This individual had previously been arrested in December 2023 and is said to be a member of a transnational "gang".

Protests and Social Concerns

On Thursday evening, a group of New York citizens gathered at the shooting site, chanting against ICE and calling for "justice." This incident comes after last year's shooting of a 37-year-old American woman by one of the agency's officers in Minneapolis, which led to widespread protests in that city and other parts of the United States.

This recent shooting has once again raised public concerns about the activities of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, particularly regarding their treatment of unarmed and vulnerable individuals such as families and children. In this context, local and national officials are expected to address this issue with greater seriousness.
