The medical team at the specialized Imam Reza (AS) Hospital 501 successfully removed a 20-kilogram tumor from a patient's abdomen in a challenging surgery. This operation, which carried many risks, could have had serious consequences for the patient, but thanks to the efforts and coordination of the medical team, the patient's life was saved.
Initial Condition of the Patient and the Need for Medical Attention
Dr. Seyyed Parviz Razaei, a general surgery specialist and the top-ranked in the country's specialty board in 2021, explained the patient's initial condition, stating that the problem had begun several months earlier, but the patient delayed visiting the medical center due to not paying attention to the symptoms. This delay in diagnosis and treatment can have dangerous consequences.

He emphasized the importance of early visits by patients and stated: "Patients should pay attention to warning signs such as abdominal pain and abnormal swelling of the abdomen and consult a doctor, as a final diagnosis may be delayed."
Surgery Details and Challenges
After conducting initial assessments, the medical team decided to perform a CT scan and biopsy of the tumor to determine the type of lesion. Dr. Razaei noted the high sensitivity of the operation, mentioning that the tumor's size was very large and involved multiple organs. One of the main concerns of the surgical team was the condition of the adjacent organs, which could potentially be affected by the tumor.
During the surgery, part of the stomach and a portion of the pancreas had to be removed because the tumor had invaded them. However, sections of the small intestine, especially the duodenum, which was close to the tumor, were successfully preserved. According to Dr. Razaei, this action will play an important role in maintaining the patient's quality of life in the future.
The surgery lasted about two and a half hours, which was less than the initial estimated time. Razaei explained that such surgeries are performed entirely as a team and praised the cooperation of all members of the medical team. Dr. Ali Qatfan, a vascular surgery specialist, the anesthesiologist, and operating room colleagues were among those who assisted in this process.
Patient's Condition After Surgery
The surgery was performed last Thursday, and the patient's general condition is currently reported as stable. He is hospitalized in a regular ward, and a normal diet has been initiated for him. According to Dr. Razaei, if the recovery process continues, the patient will be discharged in the coming days.
