Saudi Arabia, despite disruptions in its East-West pipeline, has managed to increase its oil exports from the Strait of Hormuz this month and next month. This move comes in response to Houthi attacks from Yemen on this vital pipeline, which has forced the state-owned Aramco to halt some of its shipments from the Yanbu route.

Significant Increase in Oil Exports

As a result of these developments, Saudi oil exports in September have returned to over 4 million barrels per day. This is in contrast to August, where oil exports fell to 2.4 million barrels per day, the lowest level since 2013. Initial data from Kpler shows that in the week ending September 13, 13 tankers carrying a total of 34 million barrels of crude oil exited the Strait of Hormuz.

Saudi Arabia alone accounted for half of these exports, with 35 percent of the volume related to Iraq. This data underscores the importance of the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic route for Middle Eastern oil exports, and recent developments have impacted it.

Export Statistics and Forecasts

JPMorgan analysts reported on September 18 that oil flows from the Middle East have remained surprisingly strong despite disruptions in Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline. They stated that the total oil flow over the past 10 days averaged 17.1 million barrels per day, only 6.1 million barrels per day less than the average for 2025.

According to satellite data, the volume of Saudi oil that has passed through the Strait of Hormuz over the past 6 days has averaged 2.9 million barrels per day. This figure was only 700,000 barrels per day in August, indicating an increase of more than four times in the country's oil exports and demonstrating Saudi Arabia's ability to manage crises and disruptions effectively.

The increase in oil exports from the Strait of Hormuz not only impacts Saudi Arabia's economy but also helps strengthen the country's position in the global oil market. Given that the Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most important and strategic oil transit routes in the world, this increase in exports could have significant implications for global oil prices and energy security internationally.
