On Wednesday, September 30 (October 8), Russia launched a widespread airstrike against Ukraine's energy network, targeting power facilities and infrastructure around Kyiv and other regions. This attack is considered the heaviest combined assault on Ukraine's energy facilities in recent months.

Casualties and Damage from the Attack

According to Ukrainian officials, seven people were killed in this attack, which followed several days of intensified drone strikes. Recent attacks, which many Ukrainians see as a precursor to winter assaults, have primarily targeted the capital of Ukraine. Ukrainian officials described the aim of these attacks as plunging cities into cold and darkness while Ukraine faces a shortage of air defense systems.

Ukrenergo, the state operator of Ukraine's power grid, announced that due to this attack, it was forced to implement emergency power cuts in Kyiv and three surrounding regions. This was the first time since this spring that such a measure was enacted in the capital. Last winter's attacks severely damaged power and heating systems, placing Ukrainians in very difficult conditions.

Living Conditions in Kyiv

Some trams and electric buses in Kyiv came to a halt due to power outages as people were returning home from work. The Kyiv water supply company also reported a decrease in water pressure in the network. Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Kravchuk wrote on social media after the nighttime attack on Wednesday: "Russia has intensified widespread attacks on energy infrastructure."

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that by early afternoon on Wednesday, it had intercepted 254 out of a total of 285 Russian drones used in this attack. Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, stated that among the seven casualties across Ukraine, there was one child, and critical infrastructure in five regions had been targeted.

Zelensky also visited a military command center near the city of Lyman and praised the advance of Ukrainian forces during a "counteroffensive." He announced that Ukrainian forces had reclaimed 176 square kilometers of territory since the beginning of this operation.

The Ministry of Defense of Moldova also reported that three drones entered its airspace on Wednesday, and two NATO members, Romania and Poland, scrambled their military aircraft. As winter approaches, pressure on Ukrainian civilians increases, and once again, efforts are made to turn cold and darkness into a weapon in the war.
