Russian cruise missiles have been increasingly employed in this country's air attacks since mid-2026. This strategic shift indicates a concerning turn towards the use of cheap and highly maneuverable weapons that could put pressure on Ukraine's limited air defense resources.
Air Attacks and New Challenges
Russian cruise missiles fill the gap between cheap, slow-moving attack drones and expensive cruise missiles. These weapons allow Russia to exert more pressure on Ukraine's air defense at a lower cost. According to the Institute for the Study of War, Russia is ramping up production of these missiles, improving their speed and maneuverability, and diversifying launch platforms to enhance effectiveness in 2027.

Bandrol Missile and Its Increasing Use
The "Bandrol" missile, which uses a jet engine made in China, is one of the new weapons increasingly employed in Russia's long-range attacks. The Ukrainian Air Force has reported that Russia has used these missiles in at least 40 waves of its recent attacks. The missile's capabilities in terms of speed and range are similar to those of Russia's more expensive cruise missiles, but it offers greater maneuverability.
Ukraine and its supporters currently have limited opportunities to increase production of low-cost interceptors and strengthen electronic warfare capabilities. These measures are essential to counter the aerial threats posed by the "Bandrol" missiles and to enhance layered air defense.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, had previously requested former U.S. President Donald Trump to send an urgent shipment of defensive aid, including 300 Patriot air defense missiles for Kyiv. Ukraine's interceptor missile stocks are rapidly depleting, and without these missiles, Ukraine cannot effectively counter aerial threats.
Growing concerns about the shortage of interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems have serious implications for Ukraine and other countries reliant on this weapon. Ukraine is facing new challenges that could significantly impact the country's defensive and security situation.
