Rose, the U.S. Ambassador to Poland, issued a warning about the current situation in the country via a message on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). She stated, "The events that occurred in the Constitutional Tribunal of Poland are very serious" and added that it seems we are witnessing an unprecedented confrontation.

Suspension of the President of the Tribunal and Reactions

The U.S. Ambassador, referring to the gathering of thousands in front of the Constitutional Tribunal of Poland, stated that this dangerous situation is becoming significantly more critical and severe. She emphasized, "The last thing Poland needs is tensions that could lead to a much worse crisis."

These tensions arose following the action of Donald Tusk, the Prime Minister of Poland, to suspend the President and Vice President of the Constitutional Tribunal. This action, which some consider a "coup" against Poland's judiciary, was based on an old law that allows the removal of high-ranking judicial officials if deemed a "threat to the country."

Public Protests and Arrests

Protests in Warsaw and other Polish cities have occurred following the suspension of "Bogdan Święczkowski," the President of the Constitutional Tribunal. These protests have included some demonstrators entering the court premises and throwing objects at police officers, resulting in the arrest of several protesters. These events have fueled political and legal disputes between Tusk's government and the opposition Law and Justice Party (PiS).

In light of these developments, the President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, cut short his trip to Senegal and returned to Warsaw. He wrote in a message on the social media platform X that in such conditions, the President must be present in Poland.

The roots of these tensions go back to 2015 and the rise of the right-wing "Law and Justice" (PiS) party. Over the years, this party has appointed judges close to it in the Constitutional Tribunal. With the rise of Tusk's centrist government in 2023, he promised to rectify these changes and restructure this institution.

The Polish parliament, under Tusk's coalition control, has elected several new judges, but the President has refrained from holding the swearing-in ceremony for these new judges. This legal deadlock has led Anna Korwin-Piotrowska to suspend the President and Vice President of the Constitutional Tribunal based on her higher status in the judicial hierarchy.

The deployment of police forces in the court building and the Justice Ministry's request to revoke the immunity of the ousted President is the latest link in this chain of political crisis that has now placed Poland on the brink of a full-blown confrontation between the President and the Prime Minister.
