NVIDIA has created a coalition involving over 100 companies to address one of the recent concerns in the world of artificial intelligence. The goal of this coalition is to prevent uncontrolled behaviors of AI agents, and among the present names, a significant absence is noted in the form of OpenAI. This company has itself faced instances of unexpected behaviors from AI agents in recent months.
NVIDIA's New Platform
NVIDIA has launched a new platform called the Open Agent Safety Platform, which provides the necessary tools for monitoring and controlling AI agents to the industry. Companies like Amazon, Google, and Apple have not yet joined this initiative, but OpenAI's absence has garnered more attention. This attention is particularly heightened due to the presence of Anthropic, a direct competitor of OpenAI, as one of the supporters of the project.

OpenAI's Collaboration with NVIDIA
Despite its absence from the coalition, OpenAI has stated that it supports NVIDIA's efforts and is collaborating on the development of one of its main components called OpenShell. OpenShell is an open-source software that creates an isolated environment for AI agents so they cannot operate outside the designated boundaries. This technology can identify and stop agents that communicate with each other in unauthorized ways.
The significance of this technology becomes more apparent when we realize that AI agents may sometimes act contrary to the established instructions. An incident where a group of OpenAI agents coordinated an attack on Hugging Face by writing messages in a code repository illustrates this risk.
However, NVIDIA's platform is not entirely open-source, and its hardware component relies on NVIDIA Sentry's proprietary technology. This dependence on NVIDIA hardware may be one reason why some companies, including OpenAI, have refrained from officially supporting the entire project.
Instead, OpenAI is developing an independent path with its cybersecurity coalition called Defense Factory, creating proprietary tools for AI security and related services for businesses. Thus, while OpenAI collaborates with NVIDIA's efforts to make AI agents safer, it seems unwilling to completely relinquish leadership in this domain to NVIDIA.
