Mohsen Hormozi, Deputy Mayor of Tehran, announced the start of manufacturing 2000 18-meter electric buses domestically. This project, which will soon kick off, is part of the program to develop the public transport fleet of Tehran.

History of the electric bus purchase contract

The Tehran Municipality signed a contract two years ago to purchase 2500 electric buses from China. In this regard, 500 buses have been imported to Tehran and are being utilized in the bus lines. This contract is considered part of the municipality's efforts to improve air quality in Tehran and reduce pollution.

Technology transfer and domestic production

Hormozi further explained that one of the important clauses of the contract was the transfer of technology to Iran. For this purpose, the new buses are set to be assembled and produced domestically. Chinese experts have also come to Iran for this work, and the batteries for these buses will be produced under license. This move signifies an increase in domestic capabilities and a reduction in dependence on imports.

In addition to the 18-meter electric buses, a contract has also been signed for the purchase of several 26-meter three-cabin buses, and some of these metro buses have been imported to Iran. These programs are aimed at enhancing the quality of public transport services and providing more diverse options for Tehran citizens.

Challenges and opportunities in the development of the transport fleet

Given the increase in population and traffic in Tehran, the need to improve the public transport system is felt more than ever. Electric buses are considered a suitable option for replacing the old fleet due to their lower pollution and costs over time. However, challenges such as securing financial resources and the necessary infrastructure for these projects still exist.

Ultimately, Mohsen Hormozi emphasized that the new projects are designed for sustainable development and improving the quality of life for Tehran citizens, and it is hoped that with the necessary support, these programs will quickly move into the implementation phase.
