Mohammad Javad Zarif, former Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, recently proposed the creation of a 'West Asian Security Network' following the meeting of senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan with Iranian officials in Tehran. This proposal, known by the acronym 'Vasl', aims to establish a comprehensive regional structure based on non-aggression, mutual trust, and shared prosperity.
Details of Zarif's Proposal
Zarif wrote in a message on the social media platform X: 'I suggest we take advantage of today's meeting to establish the 'West Asian Security Network (Vasl)'. 'Vasl' is a comprehensive regional network based on non-aggression, mutual trust, and shared prosperity. Regional security is not imported; it must be built by the people of this region together.'

This message was accompanied by images of verses 103 and 159 of Surah Al-Imran, which emphasize the necessity of solidarity and avoidance of division. Verse 103 of Surah Al-Imran reminds us that we must all hold firmly to the rope of God and avoid dispersing. Verse 159 also emphasizes forgiveness and consultation, concepts that are particularly important in the current context, especially in the West Asian region.
Visit of Senior Officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan to Tehran
Ali Bagheri, Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, announced this morning, Tuesday, November 4, the visit of senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey to Tehran. This visit is part of the implementation of the idea of endogenous security in West Asia. Bagheri further noted that Khalid bin Salman, the Saudi Minister of Defense, General Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, and Ibrahim Kalin, the head of Turkey's intelligence agency, will be present at this meeting.
Bagheri also referred to General Asim Munir's meeting last week with Major General Mohsen Rezai, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. This meeting was held to discuss regional security and the senior officials' decision to travel to Tehran. The main goal of this visit is to consult and exchange views on security issues and regional cooperation.
Security and Political Implications
Zarif's proposal and the visit of senior officials from these three countries could mark a turning point in regional relations and the establishment of new security mechanisms in West Asia. In a context where tensions and security challenges are acutely felt in the region, creating a security network based on bilateral and multilateral cooperation could help reduce tensions and increase stability.
It seems that these movements could also pave the way for economic and social cooperation. If the countries in the region reach a common consensus on security issues, they can move towards sustainable development and shared prosperity.
