Concerns About the War's Impact on European Security
Mertens noted in his remarks that support for Ukraine is vital not only for the future of this country but also for the security and freedom of our continent. He added: "In the weeks and months ahead, we will witness the most crucial moments that require unity and determination in supporting Ukraine."

He also pointed to the opposition from some European parties to the continued support for Ukraine, stating that this debate is not limited to Germany and is spreading to other EU countries as well. However, he emphasized that this issue should not hinder the continuation of support.
A Historical Duty to Support Ukraine
Mertens, referring to the historical responsibility of European countries in this crisis, stated: "It is our historical duty to do everything we can to assist Ukraine. We must convince people that continuing this support is in the interest of our security and freedom."
Opposition to sending weapons and financial aid to Ukraine has intensified in several European countries in recent months, such as Germany, France, and Hungary. This has become a serious challenge for governments that must take a firm stance against it.
Mertens concluded by saying: "Governments must continue their determination and solidarity until the end of the war and help Ukraine maintain peace and freedom in Europe."
