The meeting between Xi Jinping, the President of China, and Donald Trump, the President of the United States, which will soon take place in Washington, is at the center of global diplomatic attention. This meeting has become one of the most significant political events due to the sensitivity of the Taiwan issue and the related challenges.

Challenges Facing the Leaders' Summit

No one can definitively say whether Xi Jinping will actually set foot on American soil. This is because Beijing has warned Washington that if the U.S. approves any new arms sales package to Taiwan before this meeting, the summit will be canceled. This warning highlights the importance and seriousness of the Taiwan issue in the relations between the two countries.

Donald Trump has announced that he will host Xi Jinping and his wife at a formal dinner at the White House on September 24. The presence of the U.S. President to welcome a foreign head of state at the airport is a rare event, and if it happens, it will be the first time in over 60 years, aside from the Pope's visit to the U.S., that such an event occurs.

Taiwan; The Main Topic of Negotiations

Reports indicate that China is seeking to include the Taiwan issue within Trump's "deal-oriented" diplomacy framework. Jonathan Sullivan, head of the China Studies Institute, believes that if Trump is looking for "a victory," he will have more options for bargaining. However, it remains unclear whether China can effectively influence Trump.

As Beijing moves towards a more deal-oriented approach, this issue has its specific complexities, especially at a time when diplomatic negotiations are underway. China seeks a clear opposition from the U.S. to Taiwan's independence and also demands a review of arms sales packages to the island.

Many analysts believe that frequent interactions between the two leaders may help stabilize cross-strait relations and China-U.S. relations. In this context, China is looking to leverage its bargaining chips in negotiations, particularly regarding mineral exports and interactions with Iran and Russia.
