Xi Jinping, the leader of China, visited Washington recently, accompanied by two giant pandas named Ping Ping and Fu Shuang. These pandas will be welcomed as a symbol of friendship between China and the United States at the Atlanta Zoo. This is not the first time China has used pandas as a tool for diplomacy, as they were also sent to the United States after Richard Nixon's historic visit to China in 1972. However, currently, these animals seem more like superficial symbols of friendship rather than genuine ones.

Unmet Expectations from the Meeting

Following the inconclusive meeting in Beijing in May, expectations for this meeting in Washington were low. However, even this meeting failed to meet expectations. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, warmly welcomed Xi Jinping and went to meet him at the foot of the airplane stairs, stating that their relationship has never been better. This claim seems interesting given that Trump typically respects authoritarian leaders and shies away from human rights issues. Topics such as the situation of the Uyghurs or imprisoned activists in Hong Kong were never discussed during this meeting.

Serious Challenges in Bilateral Relations

During this meeting, Trump told Xi that any assistance from China to Iran is unacceptable, and Xi emphasized that the United States must adhere to its "correct position" regarding Taiwan's independence. These issues reflect deeper tensions that exist in the relations between the two countries. China also hopes that the United States will abandon its historical stance of not supporting Taiwan, but Trump faces conflicting messages regarding Taiwan.

While Trump and Xi discussed trade issues, the announcement of a two-month extension of the trade war ceasefire was made as Xi entered the United States. Additionally, China has imposed restrictions on the export of rare elements, which could harm Trump's economic efforts. Both countries are wary of each other's economic and military repercussions, while competition in the field of artificial intelligence has become one of the focal points of these tensions.

This meeting is notable not only for the lack of significant progress but also for highlighting the dangers arising from disagreements and changes in the relations between the two countries. Both sides are moving further apart instead of accepting limitations on technological development. Even limited proposals for dialogue on artificial intelligence and establishing a communication line for the safety of this technology seem inadequate.
