Marshal A. P. Singh, the Chief of Air Staff of India, criticized the restrictions on Indian personnel's access to the fifth-generation F-35 fighter jet on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of the multinational air exercise "Tarang Shakti-2026" in Jodhpur. These remarks were made in response to a question about the United States' formal proposal to sell this fighter to India. Singh sarcastically stated, "Your people don't even allow us to approach this aircraft, and you talk about selling it to us."
Access Restrictions and Fighter Displays
In this exercise, which for the first time included American stealth fighters comprising 6 F-35s, Indian personnel were not allowed to enter the cockpit of these aircraft. Singh emphasized that these restrictions create a serious contradiction between reports regarding the potential sale of the F-35 and the actual access situation. The F-35 fighter was showcased as one of the major attractions of this exercise, alongside Indian Air Force platforms, including Tejas, Sukhoi-30MKI, and indigenous Rafales, as well as French Rafales and Emirati F-16s.

The Future of Fighter Purchases and India's Self-Reliance
Marshal Singh also discussed the possibility of India purchasing the Russian fifth-generation Sukhoi-57 fighter, stating that the proposal from Russia has reached the Indian Air Force. He clarified that no decision has yet been made regarding the evaluation of this aircraft and added, "As soon as the decision (by the government) is communicated to us, we will assess how well this (Sukhoi-57) meets our needs."
These exchanges regarding the assessment of India's future fighter aircraft needs come as the country seeks to develop an indigenous fifth-generation fighter. This fighter is part of India's long-term efforts for self-reliance in defense production. The Tarang Shakti-2026 exercise brought together the Indian Air Force and air forces from eight participating countries, providing a platform for operational cooperation and professional experience exchange. This event reflects India's efforts to enhance military capabilities and improve international cooperation in defense.
