Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, stated in a recent interview with a Finnish media outlet that she would respond if Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, or Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, were to call. These remarks come as relations between the EU and Russia have become severely strained due to the war in Ukraine.
Dialogue with Russia under specific conditions
Kallas emphasized that she does not support initiating dialogue with Russia solely based on the country's conditions, but she would welcome any opportunity for negotiation that arises. She has previously met with Lavrov in international forums, including ASEAN meetings and the G20, clearly stating the EU's positions.
The EU's foreign policy chief further added: "Russia has been able to negotiate well and always presents maximum demands. At the same time, the Kremlin seeks to achieve things it has not had before." These statements reflect the existing challenges in the negotiation process and the difficulties that arise within it.
Doubt about U.S. envoys
Kallas also referred to the efforts of Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, envoys of the U.S. President, to establish peace in Ukraine and expressed doubts about these actions. She believes that this process should be entrusted to individuals who have a better understanding of how Russia operates. These remarks indicate the need for a more precise and thoughtful approach in international negotiations.
Kallas noted: "The EU currently cannot act as a full-fledged mediator between Ukraine and Russia, as it supports Kyiv." She also emphasized that any negotiations with Russia will inevitably involve issues that depend on Europe to resolve, such as the fate of frozen Russian assets.
In conclusion, Kallas stated that the EU must clearly explain that such issues cannot be resolved solely through dialogue between Moscow and Washington. Her remarks reflect a serious approach focused on resolving existing crises in international relations, especially in the current context of rising tensions.
