JD Vance, the Vice President of the United States, stated that the decision to withdraw the country's heavy bombers from the Royal Air Force Fairford base in Britain was made out of "increased caution." This action took place hours after Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, examined the situation at Fairford base and its connection to a security threat.
Security Incidents and the Decision to Withdraw
The Fairford base has witnessed a serious security incident in recent weeks that raised concerns among American and British officials. In this incident, five men were arrested on suspicion of terrorist offenses near the base and were later released on bail. A sixth man, a British-Iranian national, was also arrested afterward and was released on bail as well.

British government sources have confirmed this incident but have not officially denied the connection between the withdrawal of the bombers and this situation. Meanwhile, the U.S. Air Force has used Fairford base for military operations in the region, including the war with Iran.
Details of the Withdrawal of Bombers
Reports indicate that at least one B-1 bomber, which was supposed to be stationed at Fairford for an extended period, was transferred to the base last week. A Pentagon official confirmed on October 4 that the bombers have been moved back to their main bases in the United States. These bombers, likely around twelve in number, took off from Fairford.
While the Pentagon has refrained from providing a specific reason for this transfer, American media have reported that a new threat prompted this action. Additionally, The New York Times, citing two American officials, reported that military commanders were aware of the danger of a new plot supported by Iran against Fairford base.
Days after this incident, Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister of Britain, announced that there were "strong signs" of Iran's involvement in this matter. However, Tehran has vehemently denied any involvement in the incident. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, also expressed surprise at the release of the five men arrested in Britain and emphasized that Britain has been closely cooperating with the United States.
The B-1 bombers that left Fairford were equipped with guided bombs and air-to-ground missiles. These aircraft are capable of conducting precision operations from U.S. soil as well, but their departure from Fairford removes one of America's strategic bases outside the main territory of Europe from access.
The Pentagon has emphasized that these bombers remain capable of conducting their missions "anywhere and anytime."
