The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, in a new and significant action, has seized the REMUS 600 underwater vehicle in the Strait of Hormuz. This vessel was captured as part of the combat phase between the IRGC Navy and the U.S. Navy on October 5 of this year, and following the capture of the unmanned submarine Dive LD on September 7, it is considered the second major victory for the IRGC in this regard.

Technical Characteristics of REMUS 600

The REMUS 600 vessel, with a cylindrical design and a length of 4.3 meters and a diameter of 32.4 centimeters, is equipped with autonomous capabilities independent of user control. This vessel can remain underwater for up to 70 hours and move at a standard speed of 3 knots (equivalent to 5.6 kilometers per hour); it also has the capability to reach a maximum speed of 9.3 kilometers per hour. These features, along with lithium batteries, make the REMUS 600 an effective tool for maritime missions.

Mission and Applications of REMUS 600

This underwater vehicle is known in the U.S. Navy by the code Mk 18 Mod 2 and the nickname “King Fish.” Among the most important missions of the REMUS 600 are seabed mapping and mine detection. Using downward-facing cameras and sonar systems installed on its body, this vessel is capable of imaging underwater environments and identifying mines. Additionally, by accurately locating mines, it facilitates operations for neutralization and the use of explosives or mine countermeasures.

This achievement not only showcases the military capabilities of the IRGC but can also contribute to the advancement of knowledge and technologies related to unmanned underwater vehicles in the country. Iran's past experiences in the construction and development of such vessels will aid in accelerating the learning and application of new technologies in this field. Thus, it seems that access to these advanced tools could lead to significant advancements in the country’s maritime industries.
