Ilham Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan, emphasizing secularism and the country's independent policies, is in the midst of a controversy regarding the hijab of students. This dispute began following the Azerbaijani government's decision to ban the hijab in schools and has evolved into a deeper political and social debate.

Azerbaijan: A Secular Country

The Baku government, in response to criticisms from Turkey, has explicitly stated that Azerbaijan is a secular country and makes its own internal decisions. Mirshahin, a pro-government journalist, wrote on social media: "Understand that you are neither the big brother nor are we the little brother!" This statement clearly reflects Baku's desire to maintain its political independence and not be dependent on Turkey.

Strong Responses to Baku's Decisions

Criticism from Turkish critics, especially regarding religious freedoms and the right to wear the hijab, has intensified. Several bloggers and politicians close to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have condemned the Azerbaijani government's decision in harsh terms. In this context, the Baku government has placed 31 of these individuals on a blacklist and has subjected seven of them to international prosecution due to their criticisms.

Meanwhile, a new political image of Ilham Aliyev is taking shape. He is now recognized as a leader who sets boundaries for Ankara when necessary and emphasizes the importance of secularism and national sovereignty. Some analysts have even compared him to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, reflecting changes in the perception of Aliyev's leadership.

The Continuation of the Dispute and Its Consequences

This dispute clearly goes beyond the issue of the hijab and has become a challenge for Azerbaijan-Turkey relations. Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the former leader of the Republican People's Party, has also criticized Azerbaijan's policies and called for non-interference in women's clothing choices. These statements from various political factions in Turkey reflect the diversity of opinions on this issue.

While Azerbaijani officials manage this issue in their own way, the debate continues in Turkey. Families who have spoken with reporters have expressed concerns about the pressures faced by hijab-wearing girls in schools. In fact, the issue has seriously turned into a discussion about religious freedoms and human rights.

Given the complexities of this issue and the various reactions, it seems that the future of relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan will be influenced by these challenges. Ilham Aliyev must be able to emphasize both national independence and the secular policies of his country while maintaining close relations with Ankara.
