Hossein Rastgar, head of the Halal Center of the Food and Drug Organization, analyzed the new dimensions of the concept of "Halal" and its impacts on the global economy at a press conference for the International Halal and Health Conference. He emphasized that Halal is beyond a mere religious issue and has become a large economic market.
Expansion of the Halal Concept
Rastgar acknowledged that various countries are pursuing large-scale programs to develop the Halal market and have established strong structures in this regard. For example, Malaysia is recognized as a credible Halal certification center, and countries like Turkey and those in the Gulf region are also rapidly advancing in this area.

He pointed out that the public perception of Halal products is mostly limited to food items, adding: "Halal is not only related to food but also holds significance in the fields of medicine, transplantation, cell therapy, and even gene therapy." This perspective reflects the broad scope of the Halal concept, which includes cosmetic and hygiene products as well as medical supplies.
Risks and Challenges
Rastgar also referred to the risks posed by the illegal trade of human organs, stating: "Trafficking and theft of human organs are among the global challenges that need attention." He emphasized the importance of considering religious and ethical considerations in the production and supply of medical products.
The head of the Halal Center of the Food and Drug Organization noted that the volume of Halal trade worldwide reaches $7 trillion, stressing: "This market is not limited to food and has entered various economic and commercial fields. Iran's share of this market is only 0.2%, which is not befitting of the Islamic Republic, and we need to plan for the development of Iran's presence in this market."
Opportunities for Developing International Relations
Rastgar introduced Halal as a capacity for developing Iran's international relations, stating: "Through the Halal topic, spiritual collaborations can be established with Islamic countries, creating opportunities for cultural and social communication development."
He further referred to the goals of holding the International Halal and Health Conference, saying: "One of the objectives of this conference is to clarify the concept of Halal and increase public awareness about it, as health constitutes an important part of the Halal concept."
Rastgar also emphasized the need for inter-sectoral cooperation in this area, adding: "All relevant institutions, from the Standard Organization to the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, must come together to create value in the global Halal market."
