Greece has launched an extensive program to purchase advanced weapons with the aim of strengthening its military capability. This program includes the purchase of American and British long-range missiles designed to confront potential threats from Turkey.

Greece's Armament Program

Greece's armament program focuses on three main axes: British missiles for air combat and electronic warfare, advanced American missiles for air-to-air combat, and long-range cruise missiles capable of targeting deep into enemy territory. In this context, officials from the Greek Air Force recently met with representatives of the British company "MBDA UK" to assess the capabilities of the "SPEAR 3" offensive missiles and the electronic warfare missile "SPEAR EW." These negotiations were confirmed on October 14.

Details of the Purchased Missiles

The "SPEAR 3" missile, which has a range of over 140 kilometers, is designed to target moving targets and air defense systems. The electronic warfare version of this missile can disrupt enemy radars, impairing their defensive systems. Delivery of these missiles is set to begin in 2027. Additionally, Greece has received preliminary information regarding the price and availability of two American missiles, the "AIM-260 JATM" and the "AIM-120D-3." The AIM-260 missile is expected to have a longer range than current missiles, although its exact specifications are classified.

Alongside these, the stealth cruise missile "AGM-158B JASSM-ER" with a range of over 926 kilometers allows for attacks on distant targets without bringing the carrying aircraft too close to enemy air defense coverage. These weapons are set to be integrated with F-35 fighters, upgraded F-16s of the Viper type, and Rafale fighters equipped with Meteor missiles.

Military Competition with Turkey

This armament program is being pursued while Turkey and Greece remain in military competition. Ankara is also developing its aircraft and defense systems. The implementation of Greece's armament program depends on obtaining necessary permits, securing funding, and finalizing purchase and delivery contracts. In this context, strengthening Greece's military capability could lead to a shift in the balance of power in the region.
