Godzilla Minus Zero has made $6.7 million in its pre-release screenings in North America and is expected to finish its opening weekend with a figure close to $30 million. This sales figure could be more than double the opening of the previous installment.

Successes of the Previous Installment

Godzilla Minus One opened three years ago in North America with $11.4 million and ultimately reached a domestic gross of $57 million. This success made it the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film in North American box office history. The global gross of this film also reached $113 million; a remarkable figure for a Japanese work that had a significantly smaller budget compared to Hollywood's massive productions.

The success of the first installment was not limited to the box office. In an unexpected turn, the film won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, surpassing high-budget works like Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, Napoleon, and Creator. This achievement drew greater global attention to Japanese genre cinema and its ability to compete with major studio productions.

Story and New Features

Takashi Yamazaki once again takes on the writing and directing of the new installment. The story of Godzilla Minus Zero takes place two years after the events of the previous film; a time when Godzilla returns and a new monster enters the scene. This film is also the first Japanese work filmed for IMAX presentation; a feature that could help attract audiences to large theaters and premium screenings.

In this weekend's box office competition, the animated film Cat in the Hat from Warner Bros. has made $1 million in previews and is projected to open with $20 million, placing it in second place. The black comedy The Banshees of Inisherin, directed by Martin McDonagh and starring Sam Rockwell and John Malkovich, has made $900,000 in its limited screenings, with an opening forecast between $4 million and $7 million. Meanwhile, the Indian film Ramayana: The Rise of a Legend has also made $3.5 million from Wednesday and Thursday screenings and is likely to finish the weekend with a $6 million opening.

With these figures, Godzilla Minus Zero is not only a main contender for the box office crown but could also set new records for Japanese cinema in the North American market.
