The UEFA Champions League faced a new record in the number of goals in the second week of the 2026-2027 season. A total of 46 goals were scored in 9 matches on Wednesday (October 14), making this week one of the highest-scoring weeks in the history of the competition. Only two days in the history of the UEFA Champions League have reached this number of goals, and those were during the final days of the group stage in the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons.
Increase in Goals and Format Change
Including the 78 goals scored in Tuesday and Wednesday matches, the second week of the 2026-2027 season has become the highest-scoring week in the history of the UEFA Champions League. This number of goals is 9 more than the total goals of the first week of this season (69 goals), which is recognized as the second highest-scoring week since the new phase of the league began in the 2024-2025 season.

In the first two weeks of the current season, 36 matches have been held, resulting in a total of 147 goals, which means an average of 4.08 goals per match. This average is the highest goal average in a season of the UEFA Champions League and indicates positive changes in this competition. In the past, only the 1959-1960 and 1955-1956 seasons had higher averages than this.
The Role of the New Format in Increasing Competition
The change from the traditional group stage format to the new 36-team format allows teams to take more risks in their matches. In the old format, only 50% of the teams advanced to the knockout stage, while in the new format, 66.7% of the teams can progress from the league stage. This increase in ratio has helped reduce risk and increase competition.
For example, last season Benfica advanced to the playoffs despite losing 5 out of 8 league matches. Additionally, Paris Saint-Germain won the UEFA Champions League in the last two seasons despite not being among the top 8 teams, which demonstrates the positive impact of the new format on results.
The number of high-scoring wins has also increased since the introduction of the league stage. In the previous 21 seasons of the group stage, only 9.4% of matches ended with a team winning by more than 4 goals, while this number has increased to 14.5% in the new stage.
The Future of the Champions League and Records
This increase in the number of goals and changes in the competition format seem to be not limited to the league stage. Last season, the average goals in the first and knockout stages were 3.38 and 3.73, respectively. This season's league stage is also on track to break a new record with an average of 4.08. It remains to be seen whether this trend will continue and where the UEFA Champions League will head.
With these developments, the UEFA Champions League has become an exciting and fruitful arena that could turn into one of the most thrilling seasons in the history of this competition.
