Fairford Base in Britain has become one of the key centers for U.S. military operations during the recent war against Iran. This base has hosted American bombers that have been used to attack Iranian targets, and now the recent security incident around this base has raised concerns about its security and role in the war.

Arrests and Security Investigations

The British anti-terrorism police announced that they have arrested a dual-national Iranian-British man in connection with this incident. Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister of Britain, reported "strong indications" of Iran's involvement in this incident, while Iran has denied any interference. Following this incident, five British men aged 23 to 25 were arrested on suspicion of explosives-related offenses and "preparing a terrorist act," although all were released the next day. The police reported finding some gasoline in suspicious vehicles, but no explosive device has been discovered.

The Role of Fairford Base in the War

Since the early days of the war against Iran, Fairford Base has become an important base for U.S. military operations. B-1B and B-52 bombers have been stationed at this base and have attacked missile targets in Iran from there. Information indicates that since March 6, these bombers have actively participated in the U.S. operation "Epic Fury." General Dan Keen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the U.S. Armed Forces, stated that more than a thousand targets in Iran were attacked in the first 24 hours of this operation.

The British government initially stated that it did not participate in the initial attacks, but over time, Keir Starmer, the then Prime Minister, confirmed that London agreed to Washington's request to use British bases to destroy Iranian missiles and launchers. In this context, Fairford Base has been recognized as one of the most important centers for carrying out these military operations.

European Air Bases

The role of European air bases in the Iran war varied. Some of these bases, like Lajes in Portugal and Ramstein in Germany, primarily acted as U.S. support networks and played a role in the transfer and refueling of fighter jets. Meanwhile, countries like Spain, France, and Italy imposed restrictions on the use of their bases. Estimates suggest that the assets transferred from Europe to the Middle East constitute about one-fifth of the total U.S. forces in the region.

However, Fairford Base is clearly distinct from other bases. This base is recognized as one of the few locations from which American bombers flew directly towards targets inside Iran. Currently, this base still hosts several B-1B bombers, although no precise information about their number has been released.

Given recent developments and the importance of Fairford Base, the question arises whether this base can continue to serve as a key point for future U.S. operations in the region. The future of this base and its role in future wars will clearly depend on political and military developments in the region.
