Dr. Shiv Patel, a urologist, has recently discussed factors that increase the risk of kidney stones. He mentioned two popular beverages that many people may be unaware of their harmful effects.
The Role of Water in Preventing Kidney Stones
Dr. Patel explains that the most common type of kidney stone is calcium oxalate stones. This type of stone forms when oxalate found in various foods like spinach, nuts, and chocolate combines with calcium present in urine. Additionally, uric acid stones are more common in individuals who do not drink enough water. He emphasizes that not drinking enough water can lead to concentrated urine and, consequently, the formation of kidney stones.

People who sweat heavily, exercise regularly, or work in hot environments should pay more attention to staying hydrated. Dr. Patel states, "If I were to point out the biggest common factor in almost any type of stone, it would be not drinking enough water."
Risks of Popular Beverages
According to Dr. Patel, black tea is one of the beverages that may increase the risk of kidney stone formation. He notes that black tea, especially when consumed in excess, can lead to oxalate accumulation, which is a key component in the formation of kidney stones. Individuals who limit their iced tea consumption to two cups a day will be safe, but excessive consumption of this beverage can have consequences.
In fact, research shows that drinking black tea in moderation can help reduce the risk of kidney stones. One way to lower the risk when consuming iced tea is to add lemon to it. The citrate in lemon helps bind calcium in urine and prevents the formation of calcium oxalate crystals.
In addition to black tea, grapefruit juice can also increase the risk of kidney stones if consumed excessively. Dr. Patel adds, "Several large studies have significantly linked regular grapefruit juice consumption to a higher risk of kidney stones, although the reasons for this are still unclear."
Ultimately, Dr. Patel emphasizes that by maintaining a balanced diet and avoiding excessive consumption of beverages, one can prevent the risk of kidney stones. Therefore, attention should be paid to the types of drinks consumed, and staying hydrated should be prioritized.
