Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, has announced that Ukraine's access to the military satellite communication system Starshield has been restored. This news comes after restrictions were imposed on satellite communication services used by the Ukrainian army since mid-October 2026, which had serious impacts on the country's drone missions.
Impact of Restrictions on the Performance of the Ukrainian Army
These restrictions particularly affected the ability of Ukrainian forces to operate and control drones and counter Russian attacks. Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, announced on October 22 that the speed of satellite communications has not yet returned to pre-restriction levels and is seeking more information from Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State.

According to reports, Trump contacted Elon Musk on October 21 and asked him to lift the imposed restrictions. He stated, "I don’t want to say whether I contacted him myself or someone else did. What matters is that he has restored the services."
Communication Challenges and Controversies
Disruptions in Starshield services began in mid-October; Ukrainian officials reported that satellite communication terminals lose connection when moving at speeds over 160 kilometers per hour. This was particularly critical as Russia continued its attacks, and the need for reliable communications for military operations was felt.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk stated that the decision regarding Starshield restrictions is up to the U.S. military and ultimately Trump. However, Trump denied this responsibility, and U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth emphasized that the Pentagon had not issued any orders in this regard. At the same time, Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat, announced the start of an investigation into these restrictions.
The European Commission has also requested SpaceX to fully restore Starlink services in Ukraine. Thomas Renier, a spokesperson for the Commission, described the situation as concerning and emphasized that Ukraine needs this system to maintain military communications and defend itself.
Despite Trump's announcement regarding the return of the system, the extent and scope of the lifted restrictions remain unclear. Volodymyr Zelensky also stated in an interview that he feels betrayed by Trump due to agreements with Russia. This issue continues to raise concerns about U.S. support for Kyiv.
Overall, the current status of the Starshield system is just one part of the challenges and issues that Ukraine faces. This event illustrates how much Ukraine's access to certain critical military capabilities depends on decisions made in Washington, a matter that impacts the fate of the war and Ukraine's future.
