Posa Hill in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, has taken archaeologists into a fascinating world of history. Recent excavations at this hill have revealed evidence of a large fortress dating back to the 9th and 10th centuries, as well as the residence of bishops and a Benedictine monastery. These findings indicate that this area was far more important in the Middle Ages than previously thought.
New and Historical Discoveries
Among the recent discoveries, a 14th-century clay water pipe has drawn special attention. These pipes were designed to transport water to the monastery that was located here. This discovery is not only an ancient object but also a sign of the technical level and organization of the inhabitants of that time.

Posa Hill is strategically located above the floodplain of the Weisse Elster River; where the natural elevation of the land provided a suitable defensive position. In the 2026 excavations, archaeologists were able to examine extensive evidence of early construction phases in the southern part of the castle for the first time. One of the most interesting findings is the remains of a corner of a wall approximately 1.7 meters thick, which is believed to be part of a tower from the 9th or 10th century.
The Complex History of Posa Hill
According to the evidence obtained, this section of the fortifications was abandoned after a fire in the late 10th century, and then the defensive area of the castle expanded southward. Houses were built in this area, and it became a center of political and religious power. In the 10th century, the residence of the bishops of Zeitz was also located in this complex, and in 1114 AD, a Benedictine monastery was established here.
New discoveries will aid in a more accurate reconstruction of the history of this important medieval center. Archaeologists are still examining this site and are working to uncover its historical layers one by one. Posa Hill is not only a military fortress but also represents the life, governance, and worship of the people who lived in this spot for centuries.
