The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, today (Friday) issued a serious warning regarding the diesel fuel shortage at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, assessing it as a threat to nuclear safety. This plant, which is considered the largest nuclear facility in Europe, is in a critical condition, and the diesel fuel shortage could have dire consequences.

Critical Condition of Zaporizhia Plant

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, located in Ukraine, has been affected in recent months by military conflicts and international sanctions. According to Grossi, this fuel shortage arises from the serious challenges in supplying diesel fuel for electricity generation due to the war and its resulting disruptions. This situation could lead to serious crises in electricity supply and nuclear safety.

Grossi emphasized that the lack of necessary fuel for emergency equipment and cooling systems could increase the risks associated with nuclear incidents. Especially in conditions where plants may be exposed to greater dangers due to military tensions. He also pointed to the necessity of international coordination for supplying fuel and essential equipment and called for immediate action to prevent serious crises in these facilities.

Consequences of Diesel Fuel Shortage

The diesel fuel shortage at the Zaporizhia plant is not only a threat to nuclear safety but could also impact the economic and social situation in the region. The Zaporizhia plant, as one of the main sources of electricity production in Ukraine, is severely affected by this crisis. If this situation continues, we may face widespread power outages and increased energy costs.

Moreover, this crisis could fuel public distrust in nuclear safety and nuclear facilities globally. Grossi highlighted the need for cooperation among countries to ensure the safety and security of nuclear power plants, stating that this issue should not be overlooked in any way.
