Rabbi Younes Hamami Lalehzar, the Chief Rabbi of the Jewish community of Iran, shared in a heartfelt conversation the bitter events that led to the destruction of the historic Rafiania synagogue in Tehran. This synagogue, with over eight decades of history, was completely destroyed during the 40-day war and became one of the bitter narratives of this conflict.

History and Importance of the Rafiania Synagogue

The Rafiania synagogue was one of the 22 existing synagogues in Tehran, located in various neighborhoods where Jews resided. This sacred place not only held religious ceremonies but also provided a space for cultural and social activities. According to Rabbi Hamami, this synagogue also served as a venue for introducing books related to Judaism and hosting literary gatherings.

Rabbi Hamami sadly recalls that towards the end of the 40-day war, this synagogue was attacked and completely destroyed, making it impossible to use. With a heavy heart, he described this incident as a humanitarian and cultural catastrophe.

Damage from the Attack and the Fate of Historical Scrolls

The attack on the synagogue occurred at 3 AM, and Rabbi Hamami learned of this tragedy in the early hours of the morning. He said, "Upon arriving at the site, I was confronted with horrific scenes. Holy books and prayer texts torn apart by the explosion were being collected."

This synagogue also contained historical Torah scrolls over a hundred years old, which were buried under the rubble during the destruction. Rabbi Hamami, concerned about the damage to these artifacts, emphasized that the debris removal was carried out carefully and without heavy machinery to avoid harming the scrolls. Fortunately, after several days of effort, the scrolls were safely retrieved from the rubble.

The Role of Muslim Neighbors and Solidarity in Times of Crisis

Rabbi Hamami noted the behavior of Muslim neighbors during this crisis, saying, "The presence of our Muslim neighbors greatly encouraged us. One of the neighbors promised us that we would rebuild the synagogue, which reflects the deep solidarity among us." He emphasized that this peaceful coexistence goes beyond a normal relationship and truly forms the members of one family.

This event has not only harmed the Jewish community but has also instilled fear and concern in the hearts of all compatriots. Rabbi Hamami stated that every war is accompanied by destruction and slaughter, emphasizing that the destruction of a sacred place, whether a mosque or a synagogue, is very heavy and tragic.

Ultimately, the Chief Rabbi of the Jewish community of Iran stressed the importance of solidarity and cooperation in times of crisis, saying, "We must stand by each other and support one another. This solidarity can be a light in the darkness of war."
