The eighteenth summit of BRICS in New Delhi was a suitable opportunity to examine the status of this international coalition and the challenges it faces. BRICS, which includes large and emerging countries such as Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, despite having 40 percent of the global economy, still faces serious challenges in transforming its material and political capacities into a cohesive power bloc.

Identity Challenges and Internal Competitions

One of the main problems of this coalition is the lack of a common identity. BRICS member countries, due to cultural, economic, and political differences, do not always align with each other. The existing tensions between China and India clearly illustrate the reality that there are internal competitions within this coalition that prevent the formation of a united front. In this situation, member countries are more focused on their national interests rather than cooperation.

Conflicting Interests in Global Crises

BRICS has also struggled to make effective joint decisions in the face of global crises such as the Iran-U.S. war due to conflicting security interests among different countries. This conflict of interests clearly indicates that despite its high capacities, BRICS has yet to become a cohesive power bloc.

During this summit, the leaders of member countries attempted to find solutions to strengthen cooperation and reduce tensions through bilateral and multilateral dialogues, but the results of these efforts are still unclear. This summit clearly demonstrated that despite the economic and demographic growth of BRICS countries, the challenges in the path of convergence and cooperation among these countries remain significant and serious.

A Look at the Future of BRICS

The future of BRICS depends on the coalition's ability to manage internal and external challenges. If member countries cannot overcome their differences and achieve a common identity, it seems unlikely that BRICS can emerge as a global power. However, recent efforts to strengthen cooperation and reduce tensions indicate that there is still hope for the success of this coalition, although its path will be difficult and challenging.
