Bahman Abdi, the director general of the Youth Social Planning and Participation Office of the Ministry of Sports and Youth, discussed divorce statistics in the country during a program titled "Iran's Tomorrow" and announced a 10 percent decrease in the divorce rate in recent years. He criticized the published and incorrect statistics in this area and said: "Statistics should not be presented in a way that young people face the fear of divorce from the beginning of their married life. This approach can create a mental barrier in the path of young people's marriage."
Divorce Rate and Statistics of Married Women
Abdi further pointed out that there are currently about 23 million married women in the country, and considering this population, the divorce ratio should be examined carefully. He referred to the statistics of about 182,000 divorces per year and stated that this figure should be assessed in proportion to the population of families in the country. Abdi indicated the divorce ratio to be about 8 per thousand and warned that exaggerating this statistic could lead to serious mistakes.

He added: "If in one year 430,000 marriages and 200,000 divorces are registered, it cannot be concluded that 50 percent of marriages lead to divorce, because the registered divorces that year are not necessarily related to the marriages of that year."
Challenges of New Marriages
The director general of the Youth Social Planning and Participation Office of the Ministry of Sports and Youth, referring to the challenges of new marriages, said: "About 50 percent of the divorces that occur in the country are related to marriages that are within the first 10 years of married life. About 5 percent of the registered divorces each year are also related to marriages that are in the first year of married life."
Abdi referred to various reasons for divorce in the first year of marriage and stated that part of these divorces is related to physiological problems, part to deception in marriage, and another part to incompatibilities. He also emphasized the change in people's attitudes towards marriage and said that nowadays individuals make decisions based more on their own criteria, and marriages are conducted with greater understanding.
According to Abdi, marriage has gradually distanced itself from being solely influenced by sexual needs and social pressures, becoming a choice based on individual criteria.
