Alex Shuchenko, the CEO of NEAR Intents, announced in an unexpected turn that his team has successfully identified the hacker responsible for stealing $3.8 million from user assets. This theft was due to a vulnerability in the Omni infrastructure interactions and the smart contract of this protocol, which once again highlighted the importance of security in the cryptocurrency world.
Identification of the Hacker and a 48-Hour Deadline
Shuchenko stated in a tone different from usual cybersecurity announcements: "We have identified you" and gave the hacker a 48-hour deadline to use the "responsible disclosure" mechanism. This action reflects the NEAR Intents team's efforts to prevent further losses and recover user assets. He emphasized that after this deadline, the opportunity window for the hacker would close.

Blockchain Analysis and Asset Tracking
Initial investigations revealed that a vulnerability in the interaction between the Omni infrastructure and the smart contract caused this theft. Based on blockchain analyses, the path of the stolen funds was traceable, and part of these assets was transferred to the KuCoin exchange and then converted to Bitcoin. The NEAR Intents team has stated that it is collaborating with security companies and legal entities to track the funds.
The return of $3.8 million in user assets is considered a happy ending for this case, but it leaves deeper questions about the safety and security of DeFi technologies. This event is particularly significant as billions of dollars in assets are transferred in smart contracts and cross-chain infrastructures. What costs could a small error at the junction of two systems entail?
Ultimately, this incident not only ended with the return of assets but also reminded the DeFi industry that security and precision in the design and implementation of infrastructures are vital. In a rapidly changing technological world, ensuring the security of systems must be a priority.
