Aleksandar Vučić, the President of Serbia, ended his second and final five-year term on Sunday by announcing his resignation. This resignation comes just seven months before the end of his term and coincides with the start of the election campaign for early parliamentary voting on October 25, 2023. The aim of this move is to facilitate his appointment as Prime Minister if his party wins the elections.

Farewell Speech of the President

Vučić, expressing deep emotions to his supporters, said: "This is my last night in this building. I have served you and my homeland, Serbia, honestly... I take pride in what we have accomplished together." These words reflect the depth of his connection with the people and his commitment to serving his country.

New Political Composition

With Vučić's resignation, under the Serbian Constitution, Ana Brnabić, the current Speaker of the Assembly, will serve as Acting President until a new president is elected. According to the law, presidential elections must be held within 90 days, and the election campaign will take between 30 to 60 days. These changes could have profound impacts on Serbia's political and social processes.

Vučić had previously announced his intention to resign from the presidency in Tir 1405 (June 2023). The early parliamentary elections next month will take place between the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) led by Vučić and its allies, the Winning Students Party (an anti-corruption movement led by students), and the European Serbia Party (a coalition of pro-Western parties). This election will provide an opportunity to reassess the public support and political power of these parties.

Future Outlook

Vučić's resignation is considered a significant development in Serbia's political landscape. This change could, in turn, impact Serbia's domestic and foreign policies. Given the economic and social challenges the country faces, the election of a new president could be decisive.

On the other hand, the upcoming election campaign could provide an opportunity for opposition parties to strengthen their voices against the current government and critique past policies. Ultimately, these changes could lead to the formation of a new political atmosphere and a transformation in the organization of the country's affairs.
