Albedio Armas, President of the Governing Council of El Hierro Island, announced the state of emergency on this island in an interview with Spanish television, expressing serious concern over the rising number of new migrants. This decision was made due to the rapid and unexpected arrival of migrants to the island, and Armas emphasized that this situation necessitates cooperation with higher authorities.

Unprecedented Increase in Migrants

In recent weeks, thousands of migrants have arrived in the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, with some entering El Hierro Island. According to provided statistics, since the beginning of November, over 3,300 migrants have arrived on this island with approximately 30 boats. This sharp increase in the number of migrants has prompted local officials to consider solutions for managing the current situation.

Challenges of Housing and Healthcare Services

Armas further stated that officials are working to provide temporary housing for migrants. However, the conditions in the island's hospitals are severely strained and no longer suitable. Concerns regarding health and medical services for this high number of migrants have significantly increased. Armas pointed out these challenges, stating that there is an urgent need for cooperation with the government to respond to this crisis.

The decline in healthcare facilities, combined with the increase in the number of migrants, has created a critical situation for El Hierro Island. Armas clearly stated that if the situation continues as it is, there may be serious consequences for both the island's residents and the migrants. He urged the government to pay special attention to this issue and take immediate action in this regard.

Response to the Humanitarian Crisis

Given the current circumstances, El Hierro Island is now recognized as one of the main entry points for migrants into Spain. It is expected that the Spanish government and international organizations will collaborate more closely to address the humanitarian needs of these migrants and prevent larger crises from arising. Armas emphasized that this matter requires immediate and serious attention, and this island cannot face this crisis alone.
