The United Arab Emirates encountered a specific weather situation and widespread flight disruptions on October 16 and 17, 2026. Dense fog and a significant reduction in horizontal visibility are the main causes of these problems, particularly affecting the country's major airport, especially Dubai International Airport.
Flight Disruptions
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority has stated that this situation is part of seasonal operational challenges, and necessary measures are being taken to ensure safety and aviation standards. According to meteorological data, on the morning of October 16, horizontal visibility at Dubai International Airport dropped to 100 meters, forcing incoming flights from Mumbai and Cairo to wait in the air. These delays quickly spread to other flights, causing chain problems throughout the morning.

The UAE National Center of Meteorology issued a red alert, advising travelers and officials to take necessary precautions. At Abu Dhabi International Airport, 109 flights were delayed and 2 flights were canceled, while Sharjah International Airport also experienced 105 delayed flights and 7 canceled flights. These disruptions seem concerning, especially as the country is experiencing security tensions and conflict in the region.
Weather Factors and Their Impacts
The seasonal fog, which forms due to increased nighttime humidity and temperature drops in the UAE, leads to reduced visibility and flight disruptions. This year, this phenomenon has appeared earlier than usual, and it seems that as we approach the end of October and early December, the increase in humidity and temperature drops will continue. This weather situation has emerged while passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport in the first half of 2026 has decreased by 31.3% compared to the previous year, reaching about 31.5 million people.
This decrease in traffic, along with weather disruptions, has put the UAE's aviation infrastructure in a critical condition. Dubai Airport, recognized as one of the global transit hubs, is now facing serious challenges regarding demand and operations.
UAE aviation officials have emphasized that travelers should stay informed about their flight statuses through official channels and look for improvements in weather and operational conditions. In these circumstances, cooperation and coordination between travelers and airport officials can help reduce problems and enhance safety.
